2A: Introduction to the Nature of Explanatory Models

This segment of instruction is designed to connect what students learned about scientific arguments in material 1B to the role and nature of explanatory models in science. First they will be given a short introduction to the second section of the unit, which will inform them about what they will be doing in the coming days. Next, they will be asked to read and discuss a brief handout about scientific models and their function in science.

Successful completion of this material involves:

  • Reading about and discussing the goals of the second section of the unit
  • Participating in a class discussion around a reading describing scientific models
