Basic Norms

In order for students to learn science concepts, and what is entailed in doing science, teachers must create classrooms in which students interact regularly according to an established set of "norms." These norms describe behaviors that are conducive to productive discussions and idea-sharing. Initially, students will probably need assistance developing some basic norms (such as good listening skills) and eventually, they will be more focused on developing advanced norms such as being able to advocate a position, demand evidence to support claims, etc.

I acknowledge contributions. I praise group members for their work or ideas. Ex: "Good job, Jane." "Andy, that drawing is really a good idea."

I contribute to the team effort. I do my part to help the team accomplish its' goals. I might offer ideas, written work, organizational skills, etc. I should be able to complete the statement: "The team is better because I ____________ ."

I deal with distractions while staying on task. When other people’s conversations, background noise, etc. interrupt our group work, I try to re-focus our work on the task at hand.

I encourage others to participate in the group. I invite others to talk, offer suggestions for ways others might contribute to the group, and offer guidance rather than simply giving answers. Ex: "Who would like to be in charge of writing our summary paragraph for tomorrow?" "Tim, would you be willing to find that book on eclipses you mentioned and bring it in for us to look at tomorrow?"

I am mindful of time/deadlines. I pay attention to how much class time we have to accomplish our tasks and try to help the group complete tasks on time.

I respect the individual differences in our group. I am patient while my teammates contribute to our task at their own pace. I am polite. I recognize that each of us has different strengths and weaknesses.

I listen to my teammates. I don’t interrupt while others are talking and I pay attention to their ideas. I acknowledge when I agree with others.

I call my teammates by their names when I talk with them.
